These pictures show the bells in 1970 shows the original hanging of 1923, by Alfred Bowell of Ipswich when he recast the 6th (now the 10th) and rehung the bells in the original oak frame of 1802, stiffening it not very effectively with tie-rods, on plain bearings.
Of interest is his steel girder headstocks that he used - simple to make but with the disadvantage that such a headstock could not incorporate a central independent clapper staple such as is standard modern practice, as opposed to the original "cast-in" iron staples that were placed in the bell mould prior to pouring the molten bronze.
This certainly retained the staple permanently; but as the iron inevitably rusted over time, it expanded and often cracked the bell head - this actually happened with the treble (5th of today) and we had to have it recast in 1971.
